The Encounter with Crablante
Saitama’s Ordinary Life Before Becoming a Hero
Chapter 2 of One Punch Man takes us three years back, before Saitama became the strongest hero alive. At this point, he still had a full head of hair and was living an ordinary, unemployed life while struggling to find a job. His story takes a sharp turn when he crosses paths with a dangerous Mysterious Being known as Crablante, a grotesque crab-like monster.
The First Meeting with Crablante
Unlike terrified citizens who fled in fear, Saitama stood his ground. Crablante, surprised by Saitama’s lifeless eyes and calm attitude, assumed he wanted to die. However, Saitama clarified he wasn’t suicidal—just a jobless man tired of constant rejection. Amused by this, Crablante spares him but mentions he’s after a boy with a cleft chin.
A Child in Danger
Soon after, Saitama notices the exact boy Crablante is looking for, innocently playing in a park. When asked if he angered a crab monster, the boy admits to drawing nipples on Crablante’s body with a permanent marker. Enraged, Crablante appears, ready to kill the child. At the last second, Saitama dives in, protecting the boy.
Remembering His Childhood Dream
Though Saitama is brutally beaten during the fight, he refuses to back down. He recalls his childhood dream of becoming a hero who could defeat any villain with a single punch. Inspired by this memory, he removes his coat, wraps his tie around his hand, and challenges Crablante once more. With determination burning inside him, he fights back.
The Turning Point – Saitama’s First Victory
Crablante strikes Saitama multiple times, nearly overwhelming him. But Saitama cleverly loops his tie around the monster’s eyestalk and rips it out, killing Crablante. This becomes the first true step in Saitama’s path to becoming the invincible One Punch Man.
Three Years Later – The Price of Power
The chapter then shifts back to the present timeline. Now bald and unimaginably powerful, Saitama reflects on those early days. Despite achieving his dream of becoming unstoppable, he confesses that life feels empty. The thrill of battle is gone because no enemy can withstand even a single punch from him.
